Response to Reading 1.4 – Facebook Terms of Service

What can I say after reading Amanda French’s blog (2009) comparing the Facebook terms of service to those of other social media sites? Well, to be honest, while I like to think of myself as being quite ‘in the know’ and not at all naive, this blog, in conjunction with Adam’s lecture today, has alarmed me a little.

I have to admit that I am one of those people that scrolls through to the bottom of the terms of service with EVERYTHING and just clicks ‘I AGREE’ without having a clue what any of it said. Obviously I am INCREDIBLY naive in my previous thoughts that the terms of service would all be above board and to my liking; “Oh, everyone has an account here! There can’t be anything untoward happening! I am just going to blindly agree to whatever they are doing! Yippee!”. Yes, that is me speaking..

While I know that I won’t spend hours combing through every details of terms of service in the future, I know that I won’t be so ignorant. A skim of the contents is better than my previous actions, right? I guess the attention I pay will really depend on what the site is and what content I will be posting on it, if it is anything of significance, such as photos etc, I will be sure to pay close attention to the terms of service. And I am now also going to make sure all of my friends do too. The personal things that Facebook have access to and/or own is appalling, not to mention scary.
